The big cities attracted the most tourists this summer

This summer, tourists flocked to the major Swedish cities. In July, Stockholm and Gothenburg saw the number of guest nights increase by 363,000. The biggest percentage increase was with international guests.

The major Swedish cities are tourist magnets. Never before has there been so many guest nights in both cities. Statistics from Statistics Sweden and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth show that in July, the total number of guest nights at commercial properties in Stockholm and Gothenburg increased by 22 per cent and 14 per cent, respectively. The forecast for August sees a continuing stable increase.

“The major cities are the gateways for international visitors. We are working hard to make our cities attractive. If Sweden is to successfully increase the number of overseas tourists, access to the major cities is crucial,” states Camilla Nyman, CEO of Göteborg & Co.

The number of international guests is increasing. In Stockholm, the amount of overseas visitors increased by nearly 12 per cent and in Gothenburg 26 per cent in the period between January and July 2015, in comparison with the same period from the previous year.

“We can see that Stockholm is becoming an increasingly popular international tourist destination. There's a clear trend of tourists choosing major cities, with Stockholm having developed into a competitive alternative amongst Europe's larger tourist destinations,” says Thomas Andersson, CEO of Stockholm Visitors Board.

When combined, hotels in Stockholm and Gothenburg made up 40 per cent of all July's guest nights in Sweden, with an average occupancy of 80 per cent in Stockholm and 87 per cent in Gothenburg.

According to Statistics Sweden and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, the January-July 2015 period saw Stockholm host around 7.3 million guest nights, an increase of almost 11 per cent. Gothenburg also saw the same increase of 11 per cent during the same period.
